Apprenticeships are more than just training programmes – they’re also the perfect stepping-stone to a successful and rewarding career.

With the benefits of on-the-job experience and hands-on learning, it’s no surprise that completing an apprenticeship is the preferred pathway for many.

Nathan Dodson joined Catalyst as a People and Culture Team Coordinator Apprentice in January 2020. Since then, Nathan has been able to advance his professional development, gaining new skills and the confidence to succeed in his career.

Here, he shares his apprenticeship journey at Catalyst, touching on the many benefits and opportunities it has opened.

My apprenticeship journey at Catalyst – by Nathan Dodson

I joined Catalyst back in January 2020 as a People and Culture Team Coordinator Apprentice and so far, I’ve worked with several teams across the organisation.

These have been areas such as Customer Services and Customer Communications. Each team has slightly different needs, which has allowed me to develop new skills such as enhanced communication, organisation and task management. It’s also helped me improve the skillset I already had prior to joining Catalyst, which includes written communication and confidence.

Working at Catalyst has given me a deeper insight into the housing sector. By moving around the organisation and working in different teams, I’ve gained the knowledge I needed to complete and pass all my assignments.

From November, I’ve been working in the Customer Communications team and I’ve been able to write about our customers and their positive experiences with us. I have had input writing pieces for the customer magazine, which goes out quarterly. Reading some of the transcripts with customers really shows you how we align with our values and how we bring our customer experience to the forefront.

In July, I supported Customer Services by stepping in to communicate with our customers while some of our colleagues were on furlough. This really helped me understand what we stand for at Catalyst, and it was a great experience getting to speak to our customers.

Currently in my team, I am working to help our People and Culture directors provide the best service possible. I’m also in charge of Length of Service Awards for the whole business and Spot Awards. It has been a great experience throughout my time, and I hope to continue developing my personal brand.

Overall, my apprenticeship at Catalyst has been a life changing experience. I’ve met some great people whilst being here and my hope and end goal is to become a permanent member of the team.
